<image:title>Lake County Wine Blog - Volcanic, high elevation vineyards produce small grapes with thick skins</image:title>
<image:caption>Sam Jones - Napa Valley Wine Insider Digest In his winemaking, Arpad Molnar sources grapes from two very different extremes. The first — his father’s vineyard — lies at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains, and the second sits at 2,640 feet atop the volcanic soils of Red Lake County. As one of their wine "adventures" experiences, Obsidian staff take visitors up to their volcanic vineyard and hike the surrounding area. When first planting the latter, which would be named Obsidian Ridge, Molnar and the rest of the Obsidian viticulture crew weren’t entirely sure what they were getting into. They knew that the site was near the Clear Lake Volcanic Field and that the towering Cobb Mountain and Mount Konocti would have some sort of impact on their grapes, but upon digging, they were shocked to find larger-than-life chunks of Obsidian beneath their soon-to-be-planted vineyard. After some major heavy lifting, the high-elevation and widely varied plot was planted, and a few years later, Obsidian had its first drinkable vintage. “The hard part was waiting to see if the grapes were gonna be any good,” said Molnar. “That was the biggest leap for us.” Since planting the Obsidian Ridge vineyard in 1999, Molnar and his employees in the field have learned a lot about adapting to the site’s harsh climate, which has a tendency to leave vines exposed to the elements due to the elevation level. “We learned that it’s a lot drier up there, it’s a lot more UV and there’s a lot more extreme weather,” said Molnar. “What bodies of water do is that they modulate the weather, so up there, nothing is really demodulated so we have to leave the canopies much bigger and drape over the fruit.” These high levels of UV radiation aren’t all bad though, as they do have a tendency to give the fruit many of the qualities emblematic of stereotypical “volcanic” wines. “You have a lot of UV that is bouncing off the obsidian because it is glass, and so you get a lot of light into the fruit zone,” explained Molnar. “The reason you want that is because you get thicker skins and more flavor and color.” These smaller berries with thicker skins — and thus an altered fruit-to-skin ratio — are what many vintners planting in Lake County are looking for. These vineyards don't have the Napa Valley name, but this farmable land in Lake County tends to skew more affordable, and the terroir offers unique characteristics that some winemakers adore. Hawk and Horse Vineyards, Peter Franus Wine Company, Brassfield Estate Winery, and Sol Rouge are among these Lake County volcanic soil establishments, in addition to Obsidian, which also has a Napa Valley tasting room. “I've been farming in Lake County since 2009 and I love farming in the volcanic soils,” said Jonathan Walters of Brassfield Estate. “Lake County has young, nutrient-rich soils and they’re deeply uniform, and that allows the grapes to get small berries up at elevation.” “Also, a lot of these sites are very well-drained which allows smaller berries, higher phenolics, anthocyanins ... Everything you want in a big red dark wine.” Similarly, Bryan Kane of Sol Rouge manages his own vineyard, which is entirely covered in volcanic soils. Having worked on both Howell Mountain and Diamond Mountain, though, elevation wasn’t new to this vintner — he actually prefers it to the valley floor. “We don’t have this loamy clay type like they do down in the valley, so when it does rain, we don’t have the same problems,” he said. “Our soils drain very well, so it doesn’t puddle water [and] we don’t have the same issue with mold and mildew propagation.” Additionally, Kane says these soils also allow the vines to go deeper into the ground searching for water, which he says results in a more robust root system. “It’s pulling much more of the terroir and has a bigger structure, but it is producing the same amount of grapes on top,” he said, explaining the bitty-but-bold nature of high-elevation grapes. <image:title>Lake County Wine Blog - Napa’s Neighbor to the North: Continues to Elevate Wine - Sol Rouge Vineyard & Winery</image:title>
<image:caption>[Lake County, CA – September 2022] In the mountains north of Napa, an undiscovered wine country continues to garner high scores from major wine critics. Sol Rouge’s 2018 Petite Sirah was recently awarded 97 points in Wine Enthusiast, a new high score for Lake County wines and a sign of a rapidly developing wine region. Fifteen minutes north of Calistoga off Highway 29, is the Lake County’s wine country. Lake County wines have obtained 94 points or higher ratings by Wine Enthusiast 46 times in recent years. Sol Rouge co-owner and winemaker; Bryan Kane has been awarded several accolades, received a rating of 94 points or more for 14 of his Lake County wines. Kane also produces several highly rated wines in neighboring Napa County, including those of Howell Mountain Vineyards. Kane states, “When I moved from Napa Valley to start an estate winery in Lake County, I set out to make some of the highest quality wines in the world, just like I had done in Napa Valley. When our 2016 Sol Rouge Petite Sirah received a 96-point rating and was named the #25 wine in the world alongside Italy’s Antinori Tiganello and Napa Valley’s Dominus Estate, I knew Lake County had arrived as a world-class wine region. The 97-point rating on this year’s Petite Sirah shows that the wines from Lake County continue to improve.” Much of the success of Lake County wines is due to the region’s unique terroir. Lake County’s volcanic soil and Mediterranean climate make for exceptional growing conditions. For that reason, Andy Beckstoffer, founder and chairman of Beckstoffer Vineyards and one of Napa’s premier grape growers for cult and ultra-premium wines, has been growing grapes in Lake County for over two decades. “I like to grow my grapes here because the soil is similar to that of Napa Valley,” he stated, “I chose the Red Hills Lake County AVA because the soil is so deep and uniform from the blowoff of Mt. Konocti that it makes great wines.” With both wineries and growers seeking the unique soils and terroir to make world-class wines, Lake County continues to grow in popularity among the North Coast. Now with over 20 tasting rooms, Lake County has developed into an upcoming wine region with only 15 minutes to the north. Click Here to read the full article.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lake County Wine Blog - How to Design the Perfect Home Wine Cellar - Sol Rouge was recently interviewed and quoted in Mike Cahill’s article “How to Design the Perfect Home Wine Cellar” saying:</image:title>
<image:caption>“The most important thing about building your wine cellar is the wine! How you organize it is very important, especially as your wine cellar goes. I try to organize my cellar according to how I drink my wine. I first arrange them into wine regions (like Bordeaux, Sonoma Pinot Noir, Domestic Syrah, etc.) since I most pair my wine with food when I drink. Then, I arrange it by year and then producer so that I can more easily find a bottle that I am looking for. Lastly, those wines that I plan to drink more often will reside in a diamond bin rather than an individual bottle rack since these are more accessible and easy to sort through. That’s where I put our Sol Rouge 2016 Petite Sirah that was awarded Top 100 Wines of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. The more easily you can find your wine, the faster you can enjoy it.” To view the complete article, click here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lake County Wine Blog - Sol Rouge highlighted in article on Mourvèdre - Sol Rouge has been gaining notoriety for its 100% Mourvedre wine with our last two vintages receiving a 93 & 94 point rating respectively. These high scores hit the radar screen of a Napa Wine Writer who included Sol Rouge in a recent article about some of the top Mourvèdre producers in California.</image:title>

<image:title>Lake County Wine Blog - The Producers Behind California’s Volcanic Wines</image:title>
<image:caption>Sol Rouge Vineyard & Winery Vines Struggle so Wines Soar When Bryan Kane, co-owner/winemaker of Sol Rouge, is asked if the volcanic soil in his estate vineyard creates a volcanic flavor in the wine, he dismisses the thought. “I don’t think so,” he says. “I don’t taste it. I think that [the soil] makes you able to control your grape growing much better.” The six acres of vines that Kane and co-owner Jill Brothers bought in 2005 and planted in 2006 on a steep slope in the Red Hills Lake County AVA struggled to thrive, even with drip irrigation. Eventually, however, the vines put down roots, and that initial struggle has apparently paid off handsomely. The 1,200-case operation has earned 90–94 points for 32 of its 39 Lake County wines to date. It’s a list that includes Estate Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, plus Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 70-acre property is perched on a lower slope of Mount Konocti, and it provides Kane and Brothers plenty of room for a planned expansion of vines. Kane makes the wines at a nearby production cellar, many of which are offered in a tasting room on Treasure Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay, three hours away by car. His wines offer generous flavors and nicely rounded textures. Kane says he chooses harvest dates based on the taste of the grapes, performs native yeast fermentations, ages in French oak with no more than 25% new barrels and racks the wine as little as possible. It’s these non-interventionist methods that help to fully express the quality of the grapes, he says. “We’re not just trying to grow the berry, we’re trying to grow the characteristics of that berry,” says Kane. “And I think the deeper root systems help with that.” Click Here to read the full article.</image:caption>

<image:title>Top 100 Winemaker in the World - Bryan Kane, Winemaker</image:title>
<image:caption>With a commitment to sustainable farming practices, natural winemaking and a focus on making wines from Rhone varietals, Bryan Kane has established himself as an awarding winning winemaker. Recognized as one of the “Next Generation of Cult Winemakers” by Somm Journal and Winemaker of the Year by American Fine Wine Competition, Bryan employs philosophy of “making wine in the field” in his wines and has total control over to implement this approach with Sol Rouge, his family estate vineyard. After a number of years assisting with winemaking, Bryan Kane was named winemaker of his first commercial project in 2004 with the launch of VIE Winery – a boutique winery focused on making high quality, limited production Rhone varietal and Zinfandel based wines from many of the finest vineyards in California. Within the first two years, VIE gained, what some call, “cult winery” status with each of its wines receiving 90+ point ratings and one being named “Top 100 wines of the Year”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sol Rouge Vineyard - Fewer Clusters per Vine…</image:title>
<image:caption>Directly related to vine density is vineyard yield. It is well understood that vineyards yielding less wine should equate to higher quality, because restricting the volume of fruit being grown is supposed to result in greater concentration. So, with a high vine density vineyard, although there are more vines, there is not a greater yield. Instead, each vine focused on producing less fruit — and, like anything in life, if you are able to focus on something, you are able to do better. Thus, each vine at Sol Rouge focuses on fewer clusters and is able to produce fruit with more intense characteristics leading to higher quality wines. Sol Rouge Vineyard is planted with 9 different grape varietals including Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsaut, Counoise, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Although yields vary across different varietals and different blocks (hillside versus terrace), overall Sol Rouge averages near 3 tons per acre for its yield, which is considered ultra-premium quality.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sol Rouge Vineyard - It started as a quest to make great wine…</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2004, after looking to buy a home together in the bay area, Jill and Bryan began looking to wine country in an effort to plan for their long-tern future. Bryan, a budding young garage winemaker and avid wine collector with a 2000+ bottle cellar, knew that he didn’t want to just purchase any vineyard. With a cellar filled with wines like Harlan Estate, Bryant Family, Colgin, Sine Qua Non, and Screaming Eagle, he knew that he want to produce only exceptional wines. So, he and Jill went in search of the best land that they could afford in order to make not only good wines, but truly great wines to stand up to any of the cult wines being made in California. After almost a year of researching the wine regions Sonoma, Mendocino, Paso Robles and the Sierra Foothills, they decided to focus their efforts on Lake County — an up-and-coming wine region that use to be part of Napa County. Since the establishment of the Red Hills Appellation of Lake County in 1994, large Napa Valley grapegrowers including Beringer, Rombauer winemaker Gregory Graham, and Beckstoffer Vineyards have flocked to Lake County in search of the “next Napa Valley.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Sol Rouge Vineyard - Producing grapes for the Highest Rated Wines in Lake County…</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2005 when we planted Sol Rouge Vineyard, we had a goal. To produce the highest rated wines for Lake County — elevating our county into being one of the top wine regions in California. To produce the highest rated wines, you need to produce the highest quality grapes. We spared no expense in planting the vineyard with a high-vine density costing 4-5 times the average vineyard. It seemed to have worked! To date, Sol Rouge has earned 90–94 points for 32 of its 39 Lake County wines to date. (source: Wine Enthusiast) This is just the beginning. Each year, our vineyard continues to produce incredible grapes and the wines continue to received higher and higher ratings!</image:caption>

<image:title>Sol Rouge Vineyard - High Vine Density Planting…</image:title>
<image:caption>High vine density planing of vineyards has been all of the rage latest since Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, and others began to adopt this philosophy know as “small vine farming”, but its actually existed for centuries in the old-world. Most of top vineyards in France plant vineyards with 10,000 vines/ha - 8 times as many vines as the average premium vineyard in Napa Valley. The underlying logic is that closely planted vines have to compete with each other for nutrients and water, forcing them to expand their root structure and produce greater complexity in their fruit. (source: Jancis Robinson) Bryan was introduced to high vine density planting in 2005 by Jeff Newton who planted the Jonata Vineyard down in Santa Barbara. In an effort to plant Sol Rouge Vineyard to produce the highest quality fruit, Bryan embraced high vine density and planted the vineyard with up to 6,000 vines/ha. As one of the early adopters to high vine density farming in California, Sol Rouge Vineyards has been a model for others as it is a model for how high vine density planting has lead to the highest rated wines by any winery in the county - earning 90–94 points for 32 of its 39 Lake County wines to date. <image:title>Sol Rouge Vineyard - Red Volcanic Soils…</image:title>
<image:caption>Sol Rouge Vineyards contains rich, red volcanic soil and, from this unique profile, Sol Rouge derived its name – translating to “Red Soil” in French. As part of the Red Hills Appellation, Sol Rouge Vineyards predominantly contains the Konocti-Benridge volcanic soil type which makes sense since Sol Rouge is nestled between Mt. Konocti and Benson Ridge. Volcanic soils are porous and provide good drainage, which causes grapevines to grow deep roots to seek nutrients (source: Wine Spectator), and thus grapes grown in volcanic soil are producing some of the world's most interesting wines (source: Food & Wine Magazine). Sol Rouge Vineyard benefits from its volcanic soil as proven in our wines and highlighted in Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s article called “The Producers Behind California’s Volcanic Wines.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Sol Rouge Vineyard - High Elevation Vineyard Farming…</image:title>
<image:caption>Sol Rouge Vineyard averages 1800 feet elevation and ranges between 1450 feet and 1950 feet elevation. High elevation vineyards benefit from increase in solar rays, greater temperature fluctuations, scarcity of water resources, and the elevation changes themselves. High elevation mountain and hillside vineyards tend to receive more direct and concentrated sunlight – for every 1,000 feet gain in elevation, the level of UV rays increase by 10-12% - which forces the fruit to develop thicker skin, leading to greater color concentration and stronger tannins. The greater daily temperature fluctuations also help stress the vines during the day and provides relief to the vines overnight, causing more photosynthesis and energetic vines leading to thicker skins and more intense flavors. The scarcity of water can be both a plus and a minus. Although you need enough water for the vine to survive, you can control the water level easier, thus stressing the vine for optimal quality. In addition, there is less humidity in higher elevations, leading to less rot. Lastly, the different hillside aspects create different micro-climates, allowing you to farm different grape varietals in more optimal conditions. Sol Rouge Vineyard benefits from all of these high elevation vineyard characteristics.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sol Rouge Vineyard - Transforming a walnut orchard…</image:title>
<image:caption>Bryan, having worked with grapes from Beckstoffer’s Dr. Crane and To-Kalon Vineyards in Napa Valley, reached out to Beckstoffer and his staff for advice. After touring many existing vineyards and undeveloped land, Bryan and Jill decided on a 70 acre parcel on the northern edge of Red Hills Appellation on the side of Mt. Konocti — Lake County’s tallest mountain in the area. Nestled between Mt. Konocti and Benson Ridge on the northern edge of the Mayacamas Mountain range, was an old, abandoned walnut orchard planted on a mountain side with steep slopes and a terraced section with slopes of over 50%. Since Napa County passed what’s known as the Hillside Ordinance in 1991, forbidding any plantings on slopes exceeding a 30 percent grade, land like this could no longer be planted like those of famed hillside vineyards on Pritchard Hill like Bryant Family, Colgin and Chappellet and others like Shafer Vineyards. Fortunately, these restrictions were not yet in-place in Lake County, so this steep, hillside walnut orchard could be transformed into a steep, mountain-side vineyard.</image:caption>

<image:title>History of Sol Rouge - Developed into an estate winery…</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2009, on the vineyard’s fourth leaf, Sol Rouge Vineyard produced its first full harvest allow our first estate wines to be released. Although some blocks, like the Cinsaut which is planted at the top of the vineyard at over 50% slopes, took longer to produce a first harvest, Sol Rouge Vineyard was able to produce most of its estate bottlings including our signature Châteauneuf-du-Pape inspired blend — Gypsy Rouge. In this vintage, the vineyard was also able to produce its first Cabernet Franc, which was original planted as a blender, but was bottled on its own. Good thing it was bottled on its own as the San Francisco Chronicle named the 2009 Cabernet Franc the “Top Cabernet Franc in America”. So, from the beginning, Sol Rouge was a winner, and, today, Sol Rouge continues to produce world-class wine that rivals that of the top wines from France and Napa Valley.</image:caption>

<image:title>History of Sol Rouge - The dream continues…</image:title>
<image:caption>Looking back over a decade and a half, we have achieved our goal of building a world-class estate vineyard and winery producing the highest rated wines in its class. In 2013, Sol Rouge was the first winery in Lake County to receive a 94 point rating by one of the Big 3 (Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) Two years later, Sol Rouge was the first winery in Lake County to receive 90+ point ratings on all of its wines (all 12 wines) Recently, Sol Rouge was the first winery in Lake County to receive a score higher than 95 points one of the Big 3 Wine Rating Magazines with a 96 point rating from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Plus, Sol Rouge was named to the Top 100 Wines of the Year list with the #25 wine in the world, the first time a Lake County wine was named to a Top 100 list from a major magazine (outside of a Top 100 Best Buys list). Tomorrow — who knows! Sol Rouge continues to be driven by our goal to produce the highest rated wines in its class - in the Red Hills, in Lake County, in the North Coast, in California, and in the world!</image:caption>

<image:title>History of Sol Rouge - It started with a dream…</image:title>
<image:caption>…to build a world-class estate vineyard and winery producing the highest rated wines in its class. In 2004, Jill and Bryan lived and worked in Silicon Valley and were looking for a new home. Both Jill and Bryan worked in the high-tech industry at companies like Apple Computer, Deloitte Consulting and Oracle Corporation where Jill still works. Bryan was an avid wine collector, on all of the “cult wine” mailing lists and had a cellar of over 2000 bottles of wine from the top producers in France, Italy, and California. In looking for their next home, Jill and Bryan expanded their search from Silicon Valley to the surrounding wine regions in an effort to build a home for the long-term — to build a world-class vineyard and winery. Wanting only the best life has to offer, Sol Rouge Vineyard and Winery was born.</image:caption>

<image:title>History of Sol Rouge - It started with the vineyard…</image:title>
<image:caption>In January of 2005, Jill and Bryan found a 70 acre, mountain-side property in the Red Hills of Lake County. It was an abandoned walnut orchard situated on the side of Mt. Konocti, one of Lake County tallest peaks with slopes from 20% to over 50%. It was the perfect property to develop a world-class, high-elevation, mountain-side vineyard. To develop the highest quality vineyard, Sol Rouge Vineyard was planted using a high vine density planting - a technique used in French to produce higher quality wines. Although this technique is 4-6 times the cost of a traditional vineyard, Jill and Bryan spared no expense to produce the highest quality grapes possible. In 2006, the vineyard was planted with nine different varietals with twenty different clones. Sol Rouge Vineyard was born.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2018 Sol Rouge Petite Sirah 97 points & Cellar Selection, Wine Enthusiast Magazine This powerful, delicious, fruit-packed wine is intensely concentrated and amazingly supple despite an abundance of tannin that plays out as velvety and plush in texture. Only neutral French barrels were used for aging, yet it offers wonderful spiciness. Hints of tobacco, mint and black earth accent irresistible blueberry, blackberry and dark chocolate flavors that linger long on the finish. Best through at least 2030. — JIM GORDON, Wine Enthusiast Magazine Select the quantity below and click Add to Cart to order:</image:caption>
